Sleep. There is one ludicrous shot in the anime (not pictured here) in which the girl is sleeping and the man is standing guard. There is no movement but a fire dying down, and the scene is literally about 3 minutes long! When I first saw the film, I kept nodding off myself due to my fategued state, and whenever I snapped back to reality it was still going! Hooray for that kind of thing!
Here's the man, with his strange futuristic crucifix thingy.
The fossil of an angel? Oshii likes his fossils; check out the similar skeletons (not to mention bas-relief tree..) in 'Ghost in the Shell'. He also likes his beagles, but none in evidence here.
